What Are the Best Dental Products to Use?

There are tons of dental products available on the market, so knowing which ones are the best for your oral health can get confusing. Should you use an electric or manual toothbrush? Are all toothpastes the same? What does mouthwash do? Dr. Brent Blaylock, a Durham NC dentist, can help you decide what products to use to maintain good oral health.

Choosing the Right Toothpaste

Adults need to use toothpaste that contains fluoride, which strengthens tooth enamel and makes teeth resistant to cavities. The toothpaste you choose should also have the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval on the packaging. Not all toothpaste is the same, and there are several different types to choose from:

  • Tartar Control Toothpaste
  • Sensitivity Toothpaste
  • Whitening Toothpaste
  • Toothpaste containing baking soda
  • Tooth Gel
  • Toothpaste made for children

If you are allergic to fluoride, consult Dr. Blaylock or your primary care physician to discuss your options.

Selecting A Toothbrush

Here are a few things to consider when shopping for toothbrushes:

  • Choose a toothbrush that fits your mouth and has the right length and shape to reach all of your teeth.
  • Use a soft-bristled brush. Most manufacturers make brushes that are soft, medium or hard-bristled. Hard-bristled brushes are not good for your gums. Soft-bristled brushes are the better option.
  • Powered toothbrushes do a better job of cleaning the teeth and make brushing easier. This is also a good option for individuals whose motor skills are challenged. Electric toothbrushes aren’t necessarily the only way to clean teeth, but they are more thorough.
  • Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months or when they become worn, whichever comes first.

Mouthwash vs. Mouth Rinse

Many people are confused about the differences between mouthwashes and mouth rinses. They are two entirely different products. Many types of mouthwash contain alcohol and unless stated on the label, do not contain fluoride. Mouthwashes freshen your breath but do not clean your teeth. Mouthwashes that contain alcohol are not suitable for children.

Most mouth rinses contain fluoride that will protect your teeth from acids produced by plaque build-up. Mouth rinses also help to protect against cavities. Read the labels carefully before making your selection.
